SULPHUR - A number of metro area competitors claimed top-three finishes during preliminary races for Division I-Class 5A and Division III-Class 3A during two Friday sessions at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Swimming Championships.

The meet concludes on Saturday at the SPAR Aquatic Center with finals for Division III at 9:30 a.m. and Division I at 3 p.m.

In Division I, St. Joseph’s Academy came in first in the girls 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 51.64 seconds, while Catholic had the best prelim time in the boys 200 medley (1:38.55).

The Redstickers also had the second-best mark in the girls 400 freestyle relay and third-best mark in girls 200 freestyle (1:42.77).

Dutchtown’s Alyssa Dilldine came in first at 1:55.44, with SJA’s Victoria Padial second at 1:56.91, in the 200 freestyle prelim.

Padial had the top time in the 500 freestyle (5:21.19). And SJA’s Cameron Balkom had the best mark in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.33).

Also for SJA, MK Miller was second in the 200 individual medley (2:13.80) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.15). And the Redstickers’ MC Beaver had the third-best time in the 100 freestyle (54.84).

Also for Dutchtown, Sarah Kudijaroff had the third-best 100 backstroke mark (1:01.23).

East Ascension’s Hannah Core posted the third-best 50 freestyle prelim (24.66).

Catholic’s Brian Primeaux had the top 500 freestyle time, at 5:09.62.

Catholic went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly prelim, with Grant Grenfell first, at 52.31, and Chris Cazenave second at 52.87.

Grant Grenfell also topped the field in the 100 backstroke (51.82).

Also for Catholic, Colin Finnegan was second in the 200 IM prelim (2:00.69) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.98), while Brady Grenfell had the third-best preliminary time in the 200 freestyle.

In Division III, University’s Caroline Forbes had the top qualifying marks in the girls sprint freestyle events, the 50- (25.46) and 100 freestyles (56.28). The Cubs’ Emily Rush had the top mark in the 100 backstroke (1:02.92)

Parkview Baptist’s John Miller (200 freestyle, 1:51.00), University’s Clay Furr (100 butterfly, 54,81), Lutcher’s Mark Pousson (50 freestyle, 23.29) were Division III boys with top marks.

Lutcher posted the top mark of 1:34.93 in the boys 200 freestyle relay. Episcopal had the top marks of 1:48.78 in the girls 200 freestyle relay and 4:00.89 in the 400 freestyle relays.

Division III boys with second- or third-place prelim finishes included: UHS’ Furr (second, 200 freestyle), Episcopal’s Zack Butler (second, 100 breaststroke), PBS’ Dainon Miles (second, 100 backstroke) Parkview’s Chase Comardelle (third, 200 freestyle), St. James’ Blaise Hymel (third, 100 breaststroke) and Lutcher’s Pousson (third, 100 freestyle). Parkview’s boys 400 freestyle relay was second.

Parkview’s Danielle Miles (second, 200 freestyle), PBS’ Kristen Salles (second, 100 butterfly), Episcopal’s Cameron Barney (second, 200 freestyle), UHS’ Rush (third, 200 individual medley) and Kristen Roussel of Lutcher (third, 100 backstroke) were Division III girls with second or third-place finishes.

U-High (second, 400 freestyle) and Lutcher (third, 200 medley) also had notable relay finishes.
