LAKE CHARLES (AP)—Warren Easton defeated two-time defending state champion Salmen 46-42 to capture the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 4A State Championship Saturday night in Lake Charles.
Their first state championship in school history, Warren Easton (33-1) was led by Sabrina Banks who had 17 points. Kechell Figueroa added 13 points.
A two-point game with 6:23 left, Warren Easton went on an 8-0 run to grab their biggest lead of the game at 42-36 with 5:12 left on back-to-back 3-pointers by Figueroa and Banks.
Up 44-42 with 21.2 seconds left Figueroa calmly hit two free throws to give the Eagles a four-point lead.
Trailing 22-19 at the half, a 7-3 Salmen run midway through the third quarter gave them a brief 28-27 lead. Warren Easton took the lead back the final minute of the third, scoring the final five points of the quarter to lead 34-32.
A back-and-forth first half, an 8-0 run to end the first quarter gave Warren Easton a 13-9 lead. The Eagles lead would grow to 22-15 with 2:45 to go in the second quarter after another run, this time 6-0.
Brown scored the first 17 points for the Spartans. Kayla Sibley’s bucket with 47.4 seconds in the half was the first points for Salmen not scored by Brown.
The fourth match-up between the two teams this season, the game was also a rematch of the 2014 state championship game in which Salmen defeated the Eagles 56-48.
A signee for Baylor University, Brown led the Spartans (27-5) with a game-high 30 points and 23 rebounds. Deja Starks added six points.
