ST. AMANT — St. Amant snapped a two-game losing streak Friday with a 57-8 victory against Broadmoor on Senior Night at The Pit in a District 5-5A game.
The Gators had managed just 24 points in their last two games combined, but St. Amant busted loose for 316 yards of total offense Friday.
Quarterback Hayden Mallory led the way with 125 yards through the air on 9-of-10 passing and two touchdowns. Briggs Bourgeois was his leading receiver, hauling in four catches for 62 yards and both scores.
Nathan Taylor led the ground attack with 102 yards on 12 carries and a pair of touchdowns.
“We needed a win,” said St. Amant coach David Oliver, whose team improved to 7-2. 2-2 in district. “We hadn’t played real well the last two weeks. We knew we had to start playing better, and tonight was a step toward that.”
Broadmoor (0-9, 0-4) managed just 100 yards of offense as the Bucs stayed winless on the season. Quarterback Davante Palmer had most of the production, with 49 yards on the ground. Henry Williams provided the lone touchdown on a 20-yard score late in the fourth quarter.
Broadmoor finishes the season at home against East Ascension, while St. Amant closes at Dutchtown.
“We just need to play tough on the lines,” Oliver said. “Get to the fourth quarter with a chance to win and play grind-it-out football.”
St. Amant scored on all six of its first-half possessions.
After forcing a Broadmoor punt on the opening drive, St. Amant drove 68 yards on six plays to reach the end zone. Mallory competed a pair of passes on the drive for a combined 33 yards, including a 10-yard score to Bourgeois.
St. Amant got the ball back two plays from scrimmage later with an interception by Patrick Wolfe. He returned it inside the Broadmoor 5 to set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Taylor.
The Gators again ran for a touchdown the next opportunity. This time it was Mark Darby, who barreled in from a yard out. Mallory completed all three pass attempts for first downs on that drive, a combined 34 yards.
St. Amant went back to the air for its fourth touchdown of the half. It was Mallory to Bourgeois again from 6 yards to make it 29-0 midway through the second quarter.
Taylor got two more touchdowns before halftime, one from 23 yards and the other from 1. A fumble recovery by Jordan Klibert set up the second score, which made it 43-0 at the break.
St. Amant kept its momentum after halftime. Darby took the first play from scrimmage 65 yards for his second touchdown of the game.
Each team exchanged a turnover before St. Amant would reach the end zone for the final time. Cade Nelson had all the yards on the drive, four carries for 34 yards, capped by a 1-yard score.
The Gators led 57-0 at that point.
Broadmoor would get one score before the night was over. Palmer set it up with a 54-yard run. Williams followed it with a 20-yard touchdown carry. The successful two point conversion made it 57-8.
The second half was played with a running clock.
