LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — New Living Word used a 12-0 third quarter run to take control of the game and defeat Atlanta, 61-52 to capture the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class C State basketball championship Friday afternoon in Lake Charles.
Defending their Class C championship, New Living Word was led by Most Outstanding Player Javier Roper who finished with a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds. Xavious Williams added 18 points and 15 rebounds and Alijwon Mason had 14 points.
Tied coming out of the halftime locker room, the Lions dominated the third period. Trailing 32-30 with 5:15 left in the third, New Living Word went on a 12-0 run to take a commanding 42-32 lead that they would not relinquish.
A rematch of the 2014 Class C semifinal, New Living Word (34-10) broke out to an early 17-13 lead after the first eight minutes. Trailing 17-15 with 7:32 left in the second quarter, Atlanta (31-6) with an 11-0 run of their own to take a 26-17 lead. A 3-pointer by Roper with .2 second left in the half tied the game at 28-28.
Atlanta was led by Taren Sapp I’s 18 points and Taren Sapp’s II 14 points.
