For the first-time in its school’s history, the Zachary Broncos captured a football state championship.

The second-seeded Broncos defeated number nine John Ehret, 46-12 on Saturday night to capture the Louisiana Class 5A prep state football championship in New Orleans.

Falling behind early 6-0 after a 18-yard touchdown reception from Donte Green (PAT no good), Zachary (14-1) tied the game 6-6 when Lindsey Scott connected with Shyron White for a 69-yard touchdown (PAT no good).

Midway through the second quarter, John Ehret again took a touchdown lead on a four-yard touchdown run by Dejon Harris.

With under 30 seconds to go in the half, Zachary was able to take the lead for good when Scott found Doug Coleman for a 17-yard touchdown reception and Ashton Bastedo’s extra point made it 13-12 Broncos.

Zachary added a pair of third quarter touchdowns to push their lead to 27-12 on a 26-yard touchdown run by Scott and a 81-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Coleman.

John Ehret was seeking the school’s first football state championship in 30 years. The Patriots ended the season with a 12-3 record.
