Redemptorist High School has started the search for a new head football coach following the resignation of first-year coach Aaron Vice.

RHS Administrative Head of Schools Brian Menard announced Tuesday that Vice, a 2002 Redemptorist graduate who was 4-7 in his only season in the fall, is leaving to become the offensive coordinator at Alexandria Senior High School.

The 28-year-old Vice said leaving Redemptorist, where he played wide receiver for the Class 3A state runners-up in 2000, was a tough, emotional decision to make.

“At the end of the day, it was about getting to a public school with retirement, certification and better pay,” said Vice, who accepted the job Monday and told his players Tuesday. “It’s big-time (Class 5A) football.”

Vice said Tuesday night he met with Alexandria coach Jeff Fitzgerald, whom he knew through a mutual friend, two weeks ago. A couple of days later, he received an offer from Fitzgerald.

“I went up there figuring I’d talk to him for about 30 minutes and it ended up being a three-hour meeting,” Vice said. “I wasn’t expecting anything, but he kind of sold me on it.

“It really kind of came out of the blue. I knew he had an opening, but I didn’t expect to be offered the job a couple of days later.”

Before being hired at Redemptorist, Vice was the offensive coordinator at Catholic High School of Pointe Coupee (2007) and St. Michael the Archangel (2008-10).

The Wolves made the playoffs last season, but were eliminated in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs with a 29-21 overtime loss to Kinder.

“I wish Coach Vice nothing but the best in his coaching career as he prepares to move to a (Class) 5A school as offensive coordinator,” Menard said in a news release. “I know his hard work through the 2011 season will provide a good foundation for his successor to continue building back our program to the prominent role it has played in Louisiana sports through a focus on building young men of character.”

Menard said the school will accept applications until April 17. Candidates can submit a cover letter, résumé, and references to Football Search — RHS, 4000 St. Gerard Ave., Baton Rouge, 70506, or send an email to
