Another football season is about to kick off for Catholic High-Pointe Coupee, and one of the things coach Rob Funderburk has learned is there’s no shortage of places in town to talk about the Hornets.

Whether the green-and-white drenched conversations have taken place at Clippers Barber Shop or City Dry Cleaners, there’s a certain down-home charm that’s endeared Funderburk to the school and New Roads community.

It’s been that way for more than a decade, something rare in an era where coaching longevity - especially at a small school - has diminished.

Funderburk’s Hornets help open the 2011 season Thursday night, facing Ascension Catholic in the All-Catholic Jamboree at Redemptorist’s Majella Field. Game time is about 7 p.m., following a junior varsity game between St. Michael and Catholic High.

“I think what’s kept me here after all these years is I truly love this community,” Funderburk said. “I love the students, and the parents have been very good to me and my family. I feel comfortable here, and I feel like I’m making a difference.”

The All-Catholic Jamboree is one of three local/area jamborees at 6 p.m. Thursday. Brusly hosts University High, while Port Allen hosts Live Oak for its Placid Refining Jamboree. Junior varsity games set the stage for varsity contests.

Next week’s road opener against Ascension Episcopal officially represents Funderburk’s third season as football coach at Catholic-PC, where he’s 12-12, and the Hornets have twice advanced to the Class 1A state playoffs.

Funderburk’s tenure and job description at the school cover a lot more ground. Funderburk, who played for Dale Weiner at Catholic High, arrived at Catholic-PC in the fall of 1998 and served as Paul Varnado’s defensive coordinator.

He was also the baseball coach and led the Hornets to a district title and the state semifinals in his first season, earning state, district and parish coach of the year honors.

Then came a 1-1/2 -year period Funderburk referred to as a ?hiatus’ when he left Catholic-PC before returning in 2004. He has remained ever since.

“I felt like I wanted to do something different,” Funderburk said. “I had been coaching since I was 19 when I was at St. Aloysius (Catholic) and the freshmen at Catholic when I got the job at Catholic-PC. I didn’t know if I was ready to try something different, but it called me back pretty quick.”

Funderburk’s return in January of ‘04 provided new duties, including interim athletic director and golf coach.

Among his most important roles during that time was helping to hire Neil Weiner, whom Funderburk served as a defensive coordinator for. The staff also included current head coaches David Brewerton (Livonia), Chad Mahaffey (University) and Aaron Vice (Redemptorist).

Two years later, Catholic-PC authored one of the school’s best seasons with a 10-0 regular season and subsequent trip to the Class 1A quarterfinals before falling to Southern Lab.

For a program that had experienced hard times with consecutive winless seasons during his initial tour at the school, Funderburk marveled at the support during the memorable ‘06 season when the team played to standing room-only home crowds.

“People were four deep along the fence,” Funderburk said. “It was truly a magical time. The support we had was unbelievable.”

Funderburk took over the baseball program in ‘05 and won two more district titles and twice reached the state semifinals, the latter coming in 2010 when CHSPC won 25 games.

Funderburk became interim football coach in the final week of the regular season in ‘08 and coached Catholic-PC into the playoffs against Kentwood. He was later elevated to head football coach.

The demands of overseeing the athletic department and being the head coach of two sports, coupled with being a husband and father to three children, prompted Funderburk to relinquish his baseball duties. He hasn’t looked back.

“It’s a great place to be,” Funderburk said. “They say you never work a day in your life if you love what you do and it certainly feels that way.”
