LAKE CHARLES — The No. 1-seeded University High girls’ basketball team outlasted fifth-ranked Jewel Sumner as it ousted the Cowgirls with a 53-47 victory in the first Class 3A semifinal Wednesday in the Burton Coliseum at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Girls' Top 28 tournament.

The Lady Cubs led for a majority of the contest, but a pesky Jewel Sumner squad refused to go away quietly, making multiple runs in the second half to keep the contest close.

The Cowgirls scored the last seven points of the third quarter to cut their deficit to a single point before the fourth quarter, but U-High never relinquished its lead and ultimately earned the first spot in the Class 3A state championship game.

U-High upperclassmen provided the biggest sparks on offense for the Lady Cubs. Seniors Mikayla Bates and Alaine Fisher and junior Chelsea Verrett all scored in double digits and combined for 42 of U-High’s 53 points.

Sophomore Kaila Anderson also contributed with nine points, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.

The Lady Cubs will take on either No. 2 Ville Platte or No 3 Mansfield in the championship game Friday at 8 p.m.
