Athlete participation won’t be an issue on the first big weekend for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s other fall sports.

St. Michael the Archangel’s Bayou Boogie Invitational for cross country is set to have 65 schools compete and the Broadmoor/Woodlawn South Louisiana Volleyball Invitational features 35 teams.

Factor in West Feliciana High’s Cross Country Relay and two Capital City Swim League meets and the numbers increase by leaps and bounds. Here is a breakdown:

Cross country

BAYOU BOOGIE INVITATIONAL: Races start at 8:30 a.m. with the three-mile girls varsity race at Highland Road Park. The three-mile boys varsity race, junior varsity, middle school and open races follow.

About 900 competitors are scheduled to participate in the first major race of the season. There were 252 boys varsity runners and 165 girls varsity runners registered.

Notable teams include host St. Michael, Catholic High, St. Joseph’s Academy, Comeaux, The Dunham School, Episcopal, Menard, Newman, Teurlings Catholic and University High.

WEST FELICIANA CROSS COUNTRY RELAY: Action begins at 9 a.m. at West Feliciana Sports Park in St. Francisville with a junior high race. The varsity starts at 10 a.m.

Runners compete in teams of three for their schools with each running two miles.

Walker, Denham Springs, Live Oak, French Settlement, Brother Martin, Erath, Runnels, Zachary, Catholic-Pointe Coupee Lafayette Christian, Belle Chase, Dutchtown, Baton Rouge, Teurlings, Opelousas and host West Feliciana are scheduled to participate.


SOUTH LOUISIANA VOLLEYBALL INVITATIONAL: Pool play begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn and Baton Rouge High. Play resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday with additional pool play.

The top teams advance to single elimination playoffs at 5 p.m. The championship contest is tentatively set for 7 p.m. Woodlawn.

“I think we’ve got several good teams,” Broadmoor assistant coach/tourney director Everett Odom said. “You’ve got University High, McGehee, Barbe and Belle Chasse. As far as picking a favorite … that’s tough to do, especially this early in the season.”


CAPITAL CITY SWIM LEAGUE: The CCSL’s Kickoff Saturday consists of two meets, one that starts at 8 a.m. and the other at 11:45 a.m. at the Crawfish pool. Relays and the 500-yard freestyle events will not be contested.

Catholic High, St. Joseph’s Academy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Denham Springs, Episcopal, East Ascension, Scotlandville, University, Central, Baton Rouge High and Parkview Baptist are schools entered in the meet that starts at 8 a.m.

Schools set to compete at 11:45 a.m. include Brusly, Dutchtown, Walker, St. Michael, Plaquemine, St. Amant, West Feliciana, Runnels, Dunham, Christian Life, Lutcher, St. James and Zachary.
