CENTRAL — After trailing for nearly the entire game Central Private found a way to win the first game of its best-of-three series with Glenbrook Academy to decide the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools overall Class 2A baseball champion.

The Rebels (20-11) finally got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to claim a 5-4 victory Tuesday night at CPS.

Brennan Alvarez tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run. Minden-based Glenbrook parlayed two Rebel errors into a go-ahead run in the top of the eighth.

CPS loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth. Thomas Doucet doubled to help lead the way before Kris Templet singled in the game-winning run. The teams meet Saturday at Glenbrook to close out the series with a second and, if necessary, third game.

“Their pitchers kept us off balance,” Central Private coach Jason Kinchen said. “He did a nice job. Our pitcher Brandon Trahan kept us in the game. We struggled at bat early on in the game. Our guys bounced back. ... The ball game was back and forth.

“We’ve got to make sure we stay focused and go out to win this next game Saturday. Glenbrook’s a well coached team. They put a lot of pressure with their base running, their lead off, some of the fastest guys I’ve seen in a long time.”
