LAKE CHARLES — Top-seeded University High outlasted No. 5 Jewel Sumner 53-47 in a Class 3A semifinal that helped highlight Wednesday’s action at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Girls Top 28 tournament.

The Cubs led for a majority of the game, but Sumner refused to go away quietly, making multiple runs in the second half to keep it close.

With the victory, U-High (31-2) advances to play third-seeded Mansfield (30-3) in the 3A title game set for 8 p.m. Friday at Burton Coliseum.

Wednesday’s five-game session attracted 5,260 fans. The tourney’s two-day total at Burton Coliseum is 7,361.

Lacassine and Stanley advanced to the Class B title game set for 6 p.m. Friday.

Lacassine’s 63-43 semifinal win ended Fairview’s hopes of winning a ninth straight state title.

In 2A, top-seeded Pickering beat Lakeview 49-38.

Alanie Fisher finished with 14 points, including two crucial fourth-quarter 3-pointers for University. Chelsea Verrett scored seven of her 13 points in the final period for defending 3A champion U-High. Mikayla Bates added 12 for UHS.

Bre’Ashlee Jones had game- highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds for Sumner (29-4). Diamond Brooks added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Cowgirls, who scored the last seven points of the third quarter, cutting UHS’ lead to one at 38-37. The Cubs withstood two fourth-quarter rallies to close the win.

Class 2A

PICKERING 49, LAKEVIEW 38: Amy McKellar and Ashley Sheppard combined for 24 points to lead top-seeded Pickering to a victory over Lakeview.

McKeller scored a game-high 13 points and Sheppard had 11 for the Red Devils (29-4), who meet the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between North Caddo and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Ny’Keria Jones finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds for No. 29 Lakeview (11-18), the lowest seed in the tourney.

Class C

LACASSINE 63, FAIRVIEW 43: Second-seeded Lacassine also took the lead early and never wavered.

The Cardinals (30-5) led by six at halftime and broke the game open in the third quarter with a 19-8 run. Lacassine led by as mANY as 23 points in the fourth quarter.

Haley Cooley led Lacassine with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Madyson Brasseaux and Lindsey Priola each had 14 points to help lead the winners. Brasseaux had 12 rebounds.

Callie Maddox led Fairview (38-6) with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Maddisen Martin added 14 and Laurenn Taylor had 10. Lacassine plays Stanley (33-5) in the Class B title game at 6 p.m. Friday.

STANLEY 43, FLORIEN 38: District 3-B co-champions Florien and Stanley played the ultimate tiebreaker to open Wednesday’s five-game session.

Top-seeded Florien (38-3) won three of the four games the teams played in the regular season, but fourth-seeded Stanley advanced.

Tykeisha Monroe finished with 12 points for Stanley. Sara Housley and Michee Alexander each had 11 points. Housley also had 13 rebounds, while Alexander had 11 rebounds.

Katie Alford led Florien (38-3) with a game-high 13 points. Aja Law had a game-high 14 rebounds and eight points in a game that featured 10 lead changes.
