Baton Rouge High junior forward Natalie Presedo scored a first-half goal to lead BRHS to a 1-0 Division I girls soccer bidistrict playoff victory over Bossier City-based Parkway on Friday afternoon at BRHS.
Presedo scored her 36th goal of the season in the 15th minute from 10 yards out on the left side. Senior Madeline Bourgeois started the scoring sequence on the left side and passed to the right to junior Anna Odenwald, who assisted to Presedo.
“Natalie Presedo made a good diagonal run and hit a nice shot,” BRHS coach Sheila Achee said. “Presedo, Bourgeois and Odenwald make a tremendous triangle, and it’s hard to cover them all. We’re tough in the middle with those three.”
BRHS (19-6-3), seeded 12th, advances to a regional game next week against No. 5 St. Joseph’s Academy, a 10-0 winner over Alexandria. Sarah Town, Riley Chustz and Audrey Viso scored two goals each for SJA against Alexandria. SJA won the district title with BRHS finishing second. SJA defeated BRHS 2-1 in the first meeting and the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in the second.
Parkway (15-10-5) lost to BRHS in the opening round for the second time in three seasons. BRHS defeated Parkway 2-0 in 2013.
“We had some fantastic opportunities,” Parkway assistant coach Brett Barker said. “The game could have gone either way. The bounces didn’t go our way. We had a breakdown in communication on their goal, and it was a good counter attack by them.”
BRHS had 13 shots on goal and Parkway 10. Parkway keeper Madelyn Elliott, while BRHS junior goalkeeper Martha Cox had seven saves.
Parkway’s Sara Funderburk and Baton Rouge’s Presedo and Lindsy Scalzo play on the same Olympic Development team. Funderburk was the fastest player on the field with the ball but BRHS freshman center back Cassandra Navarro was often there to stop the attack.
PHS’s Miranda Scotten had a sliding shot in the 72nd minute that rolled to the right of the goal when was drawn Cox away from the net. Funderburk had shots in the 39th and 52nd minutes that Cox caught.
With center midfielder Bourgeois directing the attack, BRHS had other chances. Scalzo had a shot in the 15th minute. Summer West had a shot early in the second half, and Presedo took a follow shot. Scalzo also took shots in the 54th and 64th minute. Bourgeois had a good look in the 60th minute.
Achee also said her back four defenders of Hannah Williams, Hannah Fishbein, Aubrey Barrett and Navarro played well.
“We’re a very young team with just one senior,” Achee said. “For us to get to the second round of the playoffs with being so young says a lot about our team. We’re excited about playing SJA again. It’s going to be a great game.”
