FRANKLIN — Landon Clifton and Collin Landry led the way as 14th-seeded Ascension Catholic upset No. 3 Hanson Memorial 6-3 in the second round of the LHSAA’s Class 1A baseball playoffs on Tuesday.

After Hanson jumped out to a 1-0, Landry erased it with a grand slam in the third inning. It was more than enough support for Clifton, who tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and just one walk in the game played at HMHS.

“In some ways this has been a down year for us,” ACHS coach Todd Landry said. “The hitting and the pitching have really come together for us over the last couple of weeks.”

The Bulldogs (16-16), a 1A quarterfinalist for the second straight season, meet the winner of Wednesday’s Ascension Episcopal-Central Catholic game.

Garrett Hales was 3-for-4 for the Bulldogs. Austin Esquivel was 2-for-3 for the winners.

IOWA 7, WEST FELICIANA 3: In Iowa, the third-seeded Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to notch a Class 3A second-round win. Iowa plays the St. Charles Catholic-Notre Dame winner in the quarterfinals.

Two of the four runners in the decisive inning were unearned. Alex Guidry, Elwayne Carrier and Dayton Sonnier each drove in a run for Iowa (21-8). Ryan Reed finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Saints (15-14).

ST. EDMUND 6, CHRISTIAN LIFE 5: In Eunice, seventh-seeded St. Edmund (19-8) got a game-winning RBI hit from Austin Sittig in the bottom of the seventh to advance to the 1A quarterfinals.

Two players for 10th-seeded CLA (19-12) gave chase to Sittig’s hit to shallow right field. St. Edmund advances to play the Sacred Heart-Ville Platte-Crescent City winner in the quarterfinals.

Starting pitchers Drew Brown of St. Edmund and Michael Stinson of Christian Life combined to strike out 15 batters. Jacob Williams, David Alford and Garret Smith each had a double to lead the CLA offense.

WEDNESDAY’S GAMES: District 6-2A rivals Redemptorist and The Dunham School host higher-seeded second-round opponents at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Redemptorist (15-14) faces third-seeded Oak Grove in what likely will be the school’s final home sports event at Emerald Park. Dunham (18-14) takes on No. 6 Northlake Christian.

Second-seeded Runnels of Class 2A and No. 9 University High of 3A travel to play their second-round opponents. Runnels (19-4) meets No. 18 Loreauville at 4:30 p.m., while ninth-seeded UHS (20-11) travels to Thibodaux to play No. 8 E.D. White at 4 p.m.
