LAKE CHARLES — Behind an 11-1 run to open the fourth quarter, University High defeated Mansfield 52-42 Class 3A state championship game in the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Girls Top 28 Tournament on Friday night at Burton Coliseum.
U-High (28-2) was led by Alanie Fisher’s 21 points. Destiny Ephrom added 10 points and six rebounds.
It was the second consecutive 3A state championship for U-High and the third team state title this school year for the Cubs.
Trailing for the majority of the first half, U-High fell behind 37-30 with 6.5 seconds in the third quarter. The Cubs responded immediately by going on an 18-1 run that extended all the way through the fourth quarter. Chelsea Verrett’s bucket with 6:42 left in the third quarter gave U-High the lead for good at 39-37.
The Wolverines held an 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter after a 3-pointer by Jacobs at the buzzer.
Mansfield’s lead grew to as much as 37-30 in the third quarter.
The Wolverines (28-4) were led by Ashlyn Jacobs’ 18 points and eight rebounds. Kayla Drain added seven points and 15 rebounds.
