How tough was it having to sit out with the shoulder injury?
It was real tough because I was looking forward to the season. I got hurt in the spring, so I was excited to get back. I couldn’t wait.
What’s the secret? How do you get eight interceptions in six games? (Three came last week against Holy Cross)
I just watch film and study the personnel of the other team and know who their best receiver is. I know they are going to come to my side. I have to force turnovers in practice, and it translates into the game.
Did you have a goal before the season started as far as how many interceptions you wanted?
Really my goal was five.
Who is your favorite cornerback in the NFL?
Tyrann Mathieu. He just has an eye for the ball and forces a lot of turnovers. He is just a great football football player.
What’s the latest on your recruiting?
I recently got offers from Mississippi State and Notre Dame. I went to (Ole Miss) this past weekend and will be going to LSU this weekend. I have 15 offers. (Eight Southeastern Conference offers: LSU, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M).
When so you think you will you make a decision?
Maybe after this season. I will have to sit down and talk to my parents.
Rummel is on a 15-game winning streak. What makes this team so good?
It’s all coach (Jay) Roth and our coaching staff. Coach Roth and our coaching staff, they know how to win. They have been doing it for a long time. They instilled their work ethic into us. They push us in practice and we watch film and we work real hard.
Who is the toughest receiver you ever faced ?
There are a lot of good ones who are all highly recruited, so I can’t just pick out one. All the receivers in the Catholic League. Stanley (Morgan of St. Aug), Michael Chigbu (Holy Cross), Kalija (Lipscomb at Jesuit), Bryson (Simmons at Shaw). All of them are good.
What’s your favorite sports movie?
“Remember the Titans.”
What music do you listen to before a game to get pumped up?
Why do you wear No. 1?
A lot of the great players at Rummel wear No. 1. I picked it as a sophomore. I knew it was a big thing to do. With that number, I felt like I had to play a huge role.
What makes a good cornerback?
Good work ethic. Technique is the best thing when you get to the next level. That is what’s going to separate you from the other ones. When you are going against guys just as good as you, that’s what’s going to help you.
What are you looking for in college?
A great coaching staff. And of course great academics because that’s something my parents are always talking to me about.
How hungry is this team to win a third straight state championship?
Right now we are just focusing on a district championship. We have a big game this week. We aren’t worrying about state until the playoffs start. But it would be a big thing if we won it.
