SULPHUR — Second-seeded St. Thomas More defeated crosstown rival fifth-seeded Teurlings Catholic 5-1 on Saturday night at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA State Baseball tournament.
It was the second straight Class 4A state title for St. Thomas More and fourth overall. The other titles came in 1983 and 1992.
For most of the game, LSU signee Brennan Breaux silenced the powerful bats of Teurlings. In 6.1 innings, Breaux scattered one run and three hits while striking out 10, including five in a row.
KINDER 11, OAK GROVE 3: The Yellow Jackets (24-9) won its second straight 2A crown. Fourth-seeded KHS put the game away with a nine-run seventh inning.
Gavin Sonnier was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for Kinder. Zach Rider allowed five hits and struck out five, while walking three.
Drew Richard scored three runs and Dylon Poncho was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the winners. Wyatt Martin and Jackson Wyly went 1-for-3 for third-seeded Oak Grove (21-8).
OUACHITA CHRISTIAN 12, ST. EDMUND 0, FIVE INNINGS: Grant Shepherd hit two grand slams to propel the top-seeded Eagles in a mercy-rule win over the seventh-seeded Blue Jays to claim the Class 1A title.
Shepherd went 2-for-2 with, eight RBIs and three runs scored and was named Class 1A Outstanding Player.
Powered by Shepherd’s first grand slam, Ouachita Christian (31-7) led 5-0 after one inning and 8-0 after two innings. Shepher’s second grand slam came in the fourth inning on a two-out blast to make it 12-0.
St. Edmund finished 20-12.
FLORIEN 10, FAIRVIEW 2: Lane Alford led the way for the Blackcats (23-6), tossing a five-hitter and finishing 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
Second-seeded Florien broke the game opening early by scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning and three more in the bottom of the third. Jacob Oxley was 1-for-1 at the plate and scored four runs for the winners.
Payton Gordon led Fairview (16-11) champion,by going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
ELIZABETH 10, CLAIBORNE CHRISTIAN 2: Much like Florien, top-seeded Elizabeth (25-4) relied on big innings, scoring five runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth.
Colby Lafauci got the win for the Bulldogs.
by allowing four hits and striking out two in four innings. Elizabeth pounded out 13 hits as Ty Morgan finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Chance Gordon also was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Wesley Drake led No. 3 Claiborne (15-9) by going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
