1. SCOTLANDVILLE (26-2)

Was there any doubt about the 4-5A Hornets? Sophomore sensation Ja’Vonte Smart scored 50 points last Friday.

2. McKINLEY (20-7)

The Panthers have thrived in the face of coaching controversy and lead District 5-5A.

3. EAST ASCENSION (24-5), PLAQUEMINE (20-4)

Two more impressive teams. Plaquemine leads 6-4A and EAHS trails McKinley by one game.

5. WALKER (21-6)

Gets a slight edge on fifth spot after two 4-5A wins last week.

ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN:

St. Amant (17-12), Catholic (16-10), Zachary (16-10)

Classes 3A and below

1, UNIVERSITY (21-3), MADISON PREP (25-5)

Class 3A UHS and 2A MPA are still the best here and among the best in any class in the state, along with Scotlandville.

3. BRUSLY (17-7)

Nice win over 6-3A and parish rival Port Allen vaults the Panthers into this spot.

4. DUNHAM (25-4)

The Tigers lead their 2A district and have excelled the last month.

5. EPISCOPAL (24-5), SOUTHERN LAB (20-8)

The Knights trail Dunham by a game in district, and a notable rematch looms. Southern Lab is in the 6-1A driver’s seat.

Girls

Classes 5A-4A

1. DENHAM SPRINGS (25-2)

DSHS has taken on all comers and faces Zachary in a 4-5A showdown on Tuesday.

2. ST. MICHAEL (22-8)

The 4A Warriors have played the area’s toughest schedule and beat DSHS to open the season.

3. McKINLEY (20-9), ZACHARY (21-9)

McKinley is unbeaten in 5-5A and ZHS relishes its rematch with Denham Springs.

5. WALKER (19-11)

The Wildcats of 4-5A have a solid power ranking and can’t be overlooked.

ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN:

Belaire (14-9), East Ascension (13-11), Scotlandville (14-14)

Classes 3A and below

1. PARKVIEW BAPTIST (19-10)

Yes, there’s a new No. 1. The Eagles were impressive in their 6-3A win over University High.

2. UNIVERSITY (20-8)

Injuries are a huge issue, but the Cubs continue to battle, erasing an early 15-point deficit against Parkview.

3. WHITE CASTLE (12-14)

This may look odd, but the Bulldogs have recent wins over 2A Madison Prep and 1A rival Southern Lab.

4. HOLDEN (22-6)

The Class B Rockets are a team to watch in the playoffs.

5. MADISON PREP (24-5), SOUTHERN LAB (22-5)

Class 2A MPA and 1A SLHS are impressive but have much to prove in the playoffs.
