Bonnabel had high hopes coming into Thursday night's game against West Jefferson.

The reasons were clear. Bruins coach Daryl Thomas said his team put in a lot of work in practice and that improvement was coming. Together, they were hoping for their first win of the season.

But they will have to wait another week.

West Jefferson blanked Bonnabel 36-0 in District 8-5A play at Joe Yenni Stadium.

It was all Buccaneers from the start to finish.

Quarterback Wallace Lucas led the charge for the Buccaneers, completing 8 of 13 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns.

And after a characteristic slow start by both teams in the first quarter, Lucas and the visiting Bucs (2-5, 2-2) got on a roll.

Lucas made the read option look easy, waltzing in from 8-yards out to put West Jeff ahead 8-0 following a two-point conversion with no time remaining in the first quarter.

Once the second quarter began, Lucas went to the air, finding Leon Courtney on a 29-yard touchdown pass to stretch the score to 15-0.

On the next possession, Tremell Wintrop found himself on the end of a Lucas 36-yard bomb to make the score 22-0 and with 2:29 remaining before halftime.

West Jeff looked efficient on both sides of the ball, forcing five sacks and two fumbles on defense.

Coach Cyril Crutchfield attributed his team’s success to finding a rhythm and sticking to it.

“We had the momentum and it just escalated from there," Crutchfield said. "We needed to get back to winning and we were able to do just that.”

Tavis Hart returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown with 11:45 left in the game.

On West Jeff's next possession, Hart found himself on the end of a Lucas 34-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 29-0.

Hart finished the game with two receptions for 43 yards.

The Bruins (0-7, 0-4) managed to only produce four first downs in the entire game and finished with 105 yards from scrimmage, despite managing a few big runs by quarterback Kendrick Eugene.

Ernest Williams was limited to only 26 yards rushing and one catch for 8 yards.

Bonnabel eventually played three quarterbacks.

The Bruins are back in action next week against Landry-Walker. West Jeff hosts to Grace King next Thursday.
