Coaches and colleagues paid tribute to Ascension Parish broadcasting fixture Kevin Shillings.
Shillings, known for his broadcasts of St. Amant High School sports and a weekly cable television show highlighting Ascension schools, died early Sunday.
“It really hasn’t hit me yet,” Ascension broadcaster Lyall Boudreaux said. “We bonded over our love of the Houston Astros first. Kevin loved the Astros, he loved high school sports and he loved the schools in Ascension Parish. It was a passion. The timing is so odd because East Ascension and St. Amant play each other this week.”
Boudreaux said he and Shillings began broadcasting games in the mid-1980s. A former East Ascension quarterback, Shillings also used social media, including Twitter, to promote the Ascension schools and their athletes.
“Kevin Shillings was more than just the voice of the Gators; he was also a friend,” St. Amant football coach David Oliver said. “That was not the news I wanted to hear on a Sunday. He and his family were a part of our community, but he was also impartial when he called games. He will be missed.”
