Prince Davis threw a pair of third-quarter, 50-yard touchdown passes to Brennan Williams as Christian Life pulled away from Mentorship Academy for a 42-6 win Thursday night.

Mentorship Academy (0-4, 0-1) was designated the home team although the game was played at Christian Life. The Crusaders (3-1, 1-0) hosted the District 6-2A game after it was shifted from its original date for Friday.

“It was a good game for our kids with all of the last-minute changes that went on around us,” CLA coach Ben Palmer said. “I was proud of the way they kept pushing. They didn’t let the outside things affect the way we played.”

Mentorship, playing its first official district contest after playing a developmental schedule last season, took a 6-0 lead before CLA gradually overcame the Sharks.

The score was 6-6 after a quarter, and CLA led 18-6 at halftime. The Sharks had early success slowing down CLA’s rushing attack, which came into the game averaging 9.9 yards per attempt.

Prince Davis stepped up to fill the void. He threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Kibodi in the second quarter before putting the game out of reach in the third quarter.

For the game, Davis completed 7 of 9 passes for 168 and three touchdowns. On the ground, Jarod Davis topped CLA with 102 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

“It was great to be able to show we can pass the ball,” Palmer said.

Mentorship was led by running back Arthur Henry, who ran for 98 yards and a score.

“Christian Life has a really good ball club, and I’m not going to make excuses,” Mentorship coach Jeremy Gradney said. “We need to get better. We expect to do well on Friday nights.”

Mentorship played on even terms with CLA for most of the first half. The Sharks were hurt by missed chances on fourth down plays when it had chances to cut into the Crusaders lead.

The first came late in the first quarter with Mentorship facing fourth-and-inches at the MA 46. Terrion Williams was sacked for a loss of 18 yards setting up CLA’s second score.

The Crusaders went 28 yards in seven plays capped by Jarod Davis’ 5-yard run. That score, on the first play of the second quarter, put CLA on top 12-6.

Mentorship took the kickoff, and moved to a first at the CLA 40. However, on fourth-and-3 Williams threw incomplete for Tyus Taylor.

After forcing a punt, Mentorship took over at midfield. The Sharks had a fourth-and-1 at the CLA 43, but Williams was sacked for a loss of 22 yards.

Christian Life needed just four plays to cover 35 yards. The score came on a 21-yard Jarod Davis run over right tackle after he broke a free at the line. CLA led 18-6 at halftime.

Mentorship forced a punt to start the game. The Sharks took over at the MA 37, and scored in three plays. Henry took a pitch 54 yards around right end for a 6-0 MA lead.

Louis Briggs returned the kickoff 25 yards to the CLA 44. From there the Crusaders scored in four plays. Jacob Kibodi took a wide receiver screen 41 yards to the end zone tying the score 6-6 midway through the first quarter.
