The Jesuit boys and Dominican girls won the Greater New Orleans Metro Swim League Kickoff Meet on Saturday at the UNO pool.

Jesuit, which finished second in the Division I State Championship last year, scored 378 points. St. Paul’s placed second with 217 points, and Brother Martin was third with 192.5.

Dominican, which was third in the Division I state meet in 2014, edged Mt. Carmel for the Metro victory on Saturday. Dominican totaled 367 points to Mt. Carmel’s 351 points. Slidell placed a distant third with 127 points.

“It’s very important to get off to a good start,” said Bret Hanemann, who coaches both Jesuit and Dominican. “But when you look at a kickoff meet, I try to take the pressure off (the teams.) Like I tell them, this doesn’t mean much. We’re trying to establish times, to establish where we want to be in a few months. But sure, (we’re happy) with today.”

Jesuit’s Jack Jackson, who finished 3 in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, also said it’s important to get a good start to set the tone for the Blue Jays.

The perennial state championship contenders started strongly and continued to impress throughout the day.

“We’re a young team, so we want to build up that confidence,” Jackson said. “This is a great way to start the season. We want to go in strong and get consistently better.”

The girls’ competition was so close that after four events, Dominican and Mt. Carmel were tied with 192 points. But Dominican eventually pulled ahead, given the strength of its swimmers in later events.

“I was without a couple of swimmers today, so I’m very pleased with what we did today,” Mt. Carmel coach Bob Handley said. “(To finish) 16 points behind Dominican today is a good result.”
