As the number of schools being forced to delay regional-round girls basketball playoff games for multiple days due to predicted winter weather grew, the LHSAA began working on an alternate game plan.
LHSAA Assistant Executive Director Ronda Richardson said the LHSAA sent out a memo to member schools at approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday informing them that many schools in the northern part of the state will now be closed Monday and Tuesday and likely won’t play games on those days.
Richardson said the schools were told to make plans accordingly, with some games already being delayed until Wednesday. She said the LHSAA will make an announcement about how Thursday’s quarterfinal playoff round will be handled on Tuesday morning.
“We’re just taking it day by day right now,” Richardson said. “The first step was to inform the schools that there will a number of games played on Wednesday. Now we did hear that some schools are still trying to play anyway, but that’s word of mouth.
“We’ve talked about giving schools that play Wednesday some extra time before the quarterfinals. I just can’t say right now that the deadline will be extended from Thursday to Friday or Saturday for the quarterfinals. As soon as get that set we’ll let people know.”
Four more Baton Rouge area teams had their Monday games delayed by weather conditions during the day. In Class 2A, 16th-seeded East Feliciana is now scheduled to play at No. 1 Pickering at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Also in 2A, 20th-seeded Northeast and No. 29 Lakeview have not rescheduled their game yet, but NHS coach Johnny Felder said he believes the game would be played Wedneday at Northeast. French Settlement, the 12th seed in 2A, is scheduled to play at No. 5 Jonesboro-Hodge at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Class 1A Southern Lab, the 10th, is now set to play No. 10 St. Mary’s-Natchitoches at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Another 2A team, No. 8 Doyle, postponed its game with No. 9 Red River has now postponed its game until Wednesday.
