You could call it the last chapter or, more accurately, the beginning of the end.
Regardless of what your reference point is, one thing is certain — the postseason for high school spring sports is here.
It starts Monday with a few playoff softball games and one district track meet. District golf tournaments for boys, the Girls Metro golf tournament and regional tennis tournaments all are scheduled this week.
Most first-round softball playoffs are set for Tuesday. However, three teams will play Monday, including eighth-seeded Denham Springs, which hosts No. 8 Archbishop Chapelle at 5 p.m. at North Park in Class 5A.
Two Class 1A game also are set for 5 p.m. Monday: Ecole Classique vs. Ascension Catholic at the Donaldsonville Fairgrounds and LaSalle at St. John-Plaquemine. A third 1A game, Haynesville at top-seeded Catholic-Pointe Coupee, is set for 3:30 p.m. at Woodmen Park in New Roads.
In Class 2A, Episcopal travels to Winnfield also for a 5 p.m. Monday game. The deadline to play all first-round games is Tuesday night. Teams have through April 24 to complete second-round games.
Here’s a breakdown on other sports:
Track and field
The District 6-1A meet at Woodlawn starts the week of meets at 3 p.m. on Monday with field events.
Four meets are scheduled for Wednesday: the District 4-5A meet that starts at 2 p.m. at Broadmoor, 7-3A at West Feliciana at 3:15 p.m., 6-4A at Plaquemine at 3:30 p.m. and 6-2A at 4 p.m. at Episcopal.
District action wraps up Thursday with the 8-1A meet at White Castle, the District 8-B meet at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie and the 5-5A meet at Catholic High at 3:30 p.m. The running events for most meets begin between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Three regional tournaments involving area teams are set for Monday-Tuesday — the Division I, Region III tourney at the Gonzales Tennis Courts, the Division II, Region III at the Youngsville Sports Complex and Division IV, Region III at Louisiana-Lafayette. Most tourneys start at 9 a.m.
St. Amant helps lead the Ascension Parish contingent competing in the Division I, District III tourney that begins at 8 a.m. St. Michael the Archangel helps lead the list of teams competing in Division II, District III, also set for 8 a.m., while the area’s teams in Class 1A and below compete in the Division IV District III meet set for 9 a.m.
Two other tourneys will be held locally Tuesday-Wednesday. BREC’s Highland Road Park is the site of the Division I, Region II tournament that features Catholic High, St. Joseph’s Academy and other 5A Baton Rouge teams, starting at 9 a.m. Forest Park is the site of the Division III, Region III tourney that features teams from Class 3A and 2A with an 8 a.m. start.
Two boys district tournaments are scheduled locally. The first is the Division I, District 3 tourney for Class 5A teams set for 8 a.m. Tuesday at The Island Golf Club in Plaquemine.
Competition for teams in Class 1A and below is set for noon Tuesday at the Division IV, District 4 meet at the Riverlands Country Club in LaPlace.
Santa Maria Golf Course is the site of the Division III, District 3 tournament at 9 a.m. Wednesday that features Class 3A and 2A competitors. Also Wednesday at 11 a.m. is the Division II, District 3 tourney at the Wetlands Golf Course in Lafayette, which includes 4A competitors.
The girls golf postseason begins with the Girls Metro tournament set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Beaver Creek Golf Course in Zachary.
Taylor Kennedy of Runnels, St. Joseph’s Academy’s Jessica Varner and Zachary’s Paige Johnson had the top qualifying marks for the one-day event.
