Holy Cross fell in a four-run hole in the first inning and didn’t recover, falling to host Catholic High 9-5 in Game One of the Class 5A second round baseball series on Friday.
Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is set for 11 a.m. Saturday with Game 3, if necessary, set for 3 p.m.
Catholic’s Josh Smith, the No. 2 hole hitter, hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Bears tacked on two more runs to lead 4-0 at the end of the first.
The Tigers cut it to 4-2 in the second inning, but didn’t get any closer.
“We outhit them 7-6 and we had chances, leaving nine guys in scoring postion,” Holy Cross coach Greg Battistella said.
The Tigers didn’t help themselves in the field, committing three errors, walking five and hitting seven batters.
Grant Schulz went 2-for-4 with a double to lead Holy Cross (20-14).
The winner of the series advances to the third round to play the winner of the Destrehan-Denham Springs winner.
Franklinton 12, Lutcher 0: No. 3 Franklinton needed just five innings to beat Lutcher in Game 1 of the Class 4A series.
Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
The winner of the series plays the Cecilia- St. Michael the Archangel winner.
St. Charles 11, Port Barre 1: The Comets won their Class 3A opening-round game in six innings over visiting Port Barre.
St. Charles will play Notre Dame in the second round.
Teurlings Catholic 5, Belle Chasse 0: The No. 12 Cardinals were blanked in Game 1 of their second round 4A series against No. 5 Teurlings Catholic.
Game 2 is 1 p.m. Saturday.
Belle Chasse had won its last three games by a combined score of 45-0.
