MINDEN - Jesse Buratt hit a three-run home run and came and pitched 1.1 innings of relief to get the save, helping Gonzales-based Gauthier & Amedee take a 7-5 victory over Emporia, Kan., at the American Legion Mid-South Regional Tournament on Thursday.
Stephen Cardinale, who came on in relief of starter Chris Boutwell, got the victory for G&A in what was the tournament opener for both teams.
Tanner Sheets and Matt Willis each had two RBIs for the winners. Buratt finished with three hits, while Sheets had two hits.
With the win, Gauthier & Amedee advances to play Columbia, Tenn., in a second-round game set for 4:30 p.m. Friday. Columbia defeated Arkansas 12-1 on Thursday.
“In a tournament like this the first game is always the toughest,” Gauthier & Amedee coach Justin Morgan said. “There were times today when we were a little out of sync and it was hot. I think the temperature was about 115.
“We were able to battle through those things. I think tomorrow we?ll be in better shape. We?ll know what to expect and be ready to go from the start.”
Emporia opened up a 2-0 lead in the first two innings. In the third, Willis smacked a two-RBI double and later scored on a hit by Sheets, giving Gauthier a 3-2 lead.
Emporia’s Jacob Loucks tied it in the fifth with a solo home run. Sheets added another RBI hit in the seventh, setting the stage Buratt?s three-run home run in the eighth. Buratt also struck out two batters in relief.
