When St. James quarterback Lowell Narcisse Jr. committed to Auburn over the summer, the assumption was the junior would not play this fall because of a torn ACL suffered in the spring.
The Wildcats’ opponents probably wish that had been the case. Narcisse has accounted for six touchdowns in St. James’ two Class 3A playoff wins. SJHS (9-3), the 15th seed, hosts No. 7 Northwest at 7 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.
Narcisse, considered to be the top dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2017, played 17 snaps in the Wildcats’ 34-21 victory over Green Oaks in the first round of the playoffs. That total doubled to 34 snaps in a 30-19 upset of No. 2 Eunice last week, said St. James coach Dwain Jenkins.
In two games, Narcisse rushed for 190 yards on 25 carries. He’s averaging 7.6 yards per carry and has three TDs. The junior has completed 13 of 20 passes for 188 yards and three more TDs.
River Parishes leader
Top-seeded Lutcher (11-1) travels to No. 9 Kaplan (9-3) for its first road game in the Class 3A playoffs.
A win would put the Bulldogs a step closer to their first berth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Prep Classic since winning the 3A title in 2008.
Lutcher coach Tim Detillier has already achieved a key milestone. Detillier surpassed long time Reserve High coach Joe Keller as the all-time wins leader in the River Parishes when the Bulldogs beat Wossman 44-6 Friday.
Detillier now has a career record of 263-112 with stints at Lutcher and St. Charles Catholic. Keller’s record was 262-73-15.
Like old times?
Sixth-seeded Catholic High (8-3) travels to Shreveport to play No. 2 Evangel Christian (9-2) for the first time since 1999.
Evangel was the nation’s top-ranked team and was led by the nation’s top quarterback prospect in Brock Berlin. The score was tied 15-15 at halftime before Evangel, then in its first year in Class 5A, won 39-22.
Cubs at Xavier
The University High girls basketball team plays East St. John as part of Xavier University’s Xavier Classic.
Game time is set for 3 p.m. Friday in New Orleans. UHS has won the last two Class 3A state titles.
