The volleyball season starts anew this week with jamborees. Two new coaches are replacing longtime coaches and hoping to make their mark.
Brusly’s Kayla Sarradet takes over for Karen Wooley, now the Livonia coach. McKinley’s Bridget Bowman replaces Brenda Simon.
Brusly hosts the 16-team Westside Jamboree at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday. The 20-team McKinley Jamboree is at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Louisiana School for the Deaf. Each team will play three games to 25 points against different opponents.
Sarradet spent the past five seasons as an assistant to Wooley. She also played at Brusly, finishing in 2007. Bowman is a former Southern University player and spent the past three years assisting at Baton Rouge High.
“I’ve had a smooth transition,” Sarradet said. “We have five starters back from last year’s team. I’ve talked to a few coaches about how to go about certain things. We’ve got to figure out what works best for us.”
Brianna Grandville, Bria Grandville, Caitlyn Williams, Abby Hemba and Lauren Leblanc are the returning Brusly starters.
“I’m very excited about coaching at McKinley,” Bowman said. “Practice has been going well, and we want to play a faster game at the net. I think the girls have adjusted to a new system.”
Raven Mills, Terrea Sims, Emily Eley and Mikayla Robertson are returning McKinley starters.
The Westside Jamboree had four pools with four teams.
West Feliciana, St. John, Port Allen, White Castle are in Pool A. Livonia, Donaldsonville, Southern Lab and Family Christian are in Pool B. Plaquemine, Christian Life, Scotlandville and St. John JV are in Pool C. Brusly, Catholic of Pointe Coupee, False River and Runnels are in Pool D.
“Hopefully we can build a little high spirits within the team,” Sarradet said. “We’ll experiment with a few different lineups.”
Normally in one of later sessions, state power St. Joseph’s Academy helps highlight Pool A of the McKinley Jamboree. Other squads in the 3:30 p.m. start are Live Oak, St. Michael the Archangel and Episcopal. SJA has played in two straight Division I state finals, winning in 2013.
Broadmoor, Central, Dunham and the St. Joseph’s JV are in Pool B. Baton Rouge High, Glen Oaks, University and Ascension Catholic are in Pool C.
Walker, LSD, Mentorship Academy and Northeast are in Pool D. Zachary, Belaire, Friendship Academy and Woodlawn are in Pool E.
