Several local/area schools have announced signing-day plans for their football players.

The list starts with West Feliciana receiver Jazz Ferguson (LSU) and quarterback/defensive back Ryan Reed (Northwestern State) signing during an 8 a.m. ceremony at the school Wednesday.

The list of other Wednesday signings submitted to The Advocate includes:

St. Michael the Archangel running back Matthew Butler (Texas Southern) at 10 a.m.

Silliman Institute defensive lineman Jozie Milton (TCU) and linebacker Jordan Talley (Nicholls State) at 2 p.m.

Central High receiver Terrell Chatman (Miami), defensive lineman Cameron Hooper (Northwestern State) and Kevin Henry (Oklahoma State) at 2:15 p.m.

Ascension Catholic defensive lineman Delmond Landry also is set to sign with Southwest Mississippi Junior College at a time yet-to-be determined on Wednesday. Landry originally committed to Louisiana- Lafayette.

Two Southern Lab players, linebacker Javahn Ferguson and receiver-defensive back Joseph McWilliams, made final visits over the weekend. Ferguson went for an official visit to New Mexico State, while McWilliams visited Alcorn State.

The week ahead

The LHSAA soccer playoffs for boys and girls begin this week. The LHSAA releases its first power-ratings driven soccer pairings for girls on Tuesday and the boys on Wednesday.

First-round playoffs for girls are to be completed by Friday. The boys first round ends on Saturday.

Brusly is the site of the City Championships for wrestling Friday and Saturday. This annual meet marks the official start of the postseason for wrestling, which includes the LHSAA State Tournament on Feb. 20-21 in Kenner.

Also set for Saturday is the Last-Chance Qualifier indoor track meet at LSU’s Maddox Field House. A large number of competitors from across Louisiana should be entered for this meet that sets the stage for the LHSAA Indoor Championships on Feb. 21.

LSUE signs Claverie

Live Oak High baseball player Michael Claverie signed with LSU-Eunice last week.

Claverie, a shortstop, helped lead the Eagles to the Class 5A title game last spring. He also was an All-Metro selection by local/area coaches.

DSHS Hall of Fame

Nominations are being accepted for the Denham Springs High School Athlete Hall of Fame.

Guidelines for nominations can be found on the school website at www.denhamhs.lpsb.org or can be picked up at the school office. The deadline to submit nominations is March 31.

Soccer Metro Meeting

The meeting to select the boys All-Metro soccer team is set for 7 p.m. March 2 at the Baton Rouge Soccer Association office located on Lobdell.

Junior guard Kaleb Winchester of Ascension Catholic scored his 1,000th career point late last year and now has 1,280 career points.

Lane Frey is the Bulldogs’ all-time scoring leader with 2,054 points from 1996-2000.

  • Former East Ascension Player Carmisha Payton hit the first home run of the year for the LSU-Eunice softball team on Friday. LSUE opened its season with three victories in a Texas-based tournament.
