Christian Life Academy has hired former Redemptorist player and Catholic-Pointe Coupee coach Brandon Bravata as its new baseball coach.

The hiring of Bravata and induction of St. Amant High’s Scott Nielson into the Louisiana Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame were among the week’s notable events.

“I’m excited about being able to coach in Baton Rouge again,” Bravata said. “I know coach (Jonathan) Causey has been doing a great job building the program up, and I look forward to continuing what he started.

“Christian Life is new to me, but I sense that family atmosphere … a lot like we had at Redemptorist when I played there.”

Bravata, a former LSU Shreveport standout, was the baseball coach at CHSPC in 2011-12. He spent the 2013-14 seasons as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator for LSU-Alexandria. Bravata also has been a volunteer coach at Louisiana Tech and worked for Marucci.

Causey, who coached the Crusaders to the Class 1A playoffs, resigned to become baseball coach at Houston’s Northland Christian.

Nielson was honored as the LSCA Hall of Fame inductee in conjuction with the LHSCA All-Star games in Pineville.

“It’s a situation where we’ve had some great players and great players really make coaches look good,” St. Amant’s Nielson said. “There have been a lot of coaches through the years who really don’t have the opportunity to coach great players. I’ve been very fortunate at St. Amant High School with the administrative support and the community support. This is an honor for the community. I’m very humbled.”

St. Michael honors two

St. Michael the Archangel added former athletes Josh Goodson and Whitney Dunlap to its Wall of Honor.

Goodson was a three-time state champion in wrestling and later an assistant coach for the Warriors in wrestling. He made the All-Metro squad in 1997. Dunlap was an All-Metro and all-district and all-state choice in girls basketball and went on to play at Louisiana-Lafayette. Dunlap, who also played softball, still holds 3-point and all-time scoring records.
