Baseball coaches expect some changes whenever the LHSAA releases its final power rankings and playoff pairings.

That’s why Doyle coach Tim Beatty or Runnels coach Tookie Johnson were not surprised when Doyle edged past Runnels to claim the top seed in Class 2A when the playoff pairings were released on Tuesday.

Runnels held the top spot in last week’s power rankings. But when the Tigers and Raiders split their District 7-2A games last week it was just enough to put Livingston Parish-based Doyle over the top.

“We looked at it and kind of figured it would fall that way,” Beatty said. “But of course now you have to go play. We’ve worked hard the three years I’ve been here to get to this point so the kids are excited.”

Top-seeded Doyle (20-5) is scheduled to play No. 32 Winnfield (9-13) at 5 p.m. Friday. Second-seeded Runnels (19-4) is set to host No. 31 Many (14-13) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Another 7-2A team, Hammond’s St. Thomas Aquinas (19-9), got the No. 5 seed.

Evangel Christian in 3A, Ouachita Christian in 1A, Monterey in Class B and Elizabeth in Class C are the other top seeds. Teams have until Saturday to complete first-round games.

Parkview Baptist (19-12), rated fifth, leads the area’s 3A contingent. Seventh-seeded Brusly (22-9) and No. 9 University (19-11) also claimed spots in the top 10.

No District 6-2A team earned a spot in the top 16. Redemptorist (14-14) sits at No. 19. St. John-Plaquemine (ninth) and Christian Life (10th) are the area’s top 1A teams, while Maurepas of Class B and Family Christian of Class C each claimed a fifth seed in their classifications.
