Newman senior wide receiver Jay Tyler has rushed for 261 yards and a pair of touchdowns, has caught nine passes for 155 yards and 4 touchdowns and threw for 390 yards and four TDs before an injury forced him to be switched to receiver. He was named The New Orleans Advocate’s Small School Offensive Player of the Year as a junior.

Two weeks ago, you became Newman’s career’s all-time touchdown leader. How does it feel to pass guys like Peyton Manning and Eli Manning and Odell Beckham, Jr. and all of the other players who have come through Newman?

To be honest, it’s just a blessing. It’s always an honor just to be mentioned with names like those. But it’s basically just a testament to the team. I can’t do any of it without them.

Right now I hold six offers. Three are from Ivy League schools: Harvard, Dartmouth and Yale. I also have one from Air Force. Hopefully some more will come up in the next few weeks.

How tough is juggling grades and football?

It really isn’t that hard. Academics come first.

How tough was it making the adjustment from quarterback to receiver?

My first position was wide receiver when I was 6 years old. None of that really carried over though.

But I watched guys like Wyatt Mumfrey and Tyler Addison and Elbert Thomas and I see what they do. And I know that will be my position in college. Trust me it’s fun.

Better football player: Jay Tyler or Herb Tyler? (Herb Tyler played quarterback at LSU in the 90s).

You already know it’s me. I can beat him running. He can probably can throw a football further though, He’s strong.

What’s the best football advice your dad has given you?

He really doesn’t give me any physical advice now. Now it’s more about the mental points. Just staying composed and doing what I can do to help the team win.

The football comes from your dad. What did you get from your mom?

The ability to cook. She wasn’t an athlete, but she is a great cook.
