Early in Sunday’s American Legion southeast regional tournament baseball game at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, Rummel-based Deanie’s Seafood had a two-run lead on Hahnville-based Otto Candies.

But Otto Candies found an answer, using a six-run fifth and hanging on for a 7-4 win.

At 7 p.m. Monday, Otto Candies (15-5-1) plays Peake BMW, which defeated Refuel 4-0 on Sunday night. Deanie’s will play the John Curtis-based River Ridge Patriots in an elimination game at 1 p.m.

“The game came down to the six-run fifth,” Otto Candies coach David Baudry said. “I felt like we were kind of letting them take the game to us, so we kind of started runners and tried to be a little more aggressive. It really worked out. Our hitters did a tremendous job in that inning of just staying inside the ball and just poking it into the gaps.”

Deanie’s (10-8) scored in the first when Darren Willis came home on a dropped third strike during Tyler Neece’s at-bat. It added another run in the second as Jeremy Gaudet scored when Luke Lacoste hit into a double play.

“It’s a tribute to our guys to come out, not really play hard in the beginning, and just turn it on, to get into the driver’s seat game (to qualify for the state tournament),” Baudry said.

Otto Candies got its first run in the fifth when Chase Bagot tripled to center, bringing home Dylan Keller.

The offense kept coming, in all bringing home five more runs on six hits to take a 6-2 lead. That caused Deanie’s to pull Connor Cosse, who lasted 4.1 innings, in favor of Shane Naquin.

Otto Candies took a 7-2 lead in the seventh when Bradley Aucoin hit an RBI single that scored Peyton Robert.

Otto Candies’ Mark Abate pitched 8.2 innings and boosted his record to 6-0. Waylon LeBlanc recorded the final out.

For Deanie’s coach Nick Monica, failure to minimize the damage hindered his team’s ability to take back control of the game, even though it did score two runs in the ninth.

“We gave up a couple of base hits, then we made things worse,” he said. “It kind of snowballed out of control.”

In Sunday’s early games, Jesuit-based Retif Oil eliminated Ascension Parish-based Gauthier & Amedee 11-3. Also, River Ridge bounced Mandeville-based LLOG 10-2.
