Boys Most Outstanding Runner

Adam Wise, Fontainebleau, Senior

Adam Wise was on the track and field team in junior high school when some friends suggested he give cross country a try too.

"I just went out and did it, not expecting much from it and started liking it a lot," he recalls.

Wise choice.

Wise, a senior at Fontainebleau, capped off his high school career by capturing first place at the LHSAA Class 5A state championship meet , finishing in a time of 15:20.56.

"I was happy with how I competed this year," Wise said. "I thought my times could have been better at different  points in the season, but overall I thought I ran well."

Wise went 7-0 in meets he competed in this season on his way to being named Most Outstanding Runner on The New Orleans Advocate's All-Metro Cross Country Team. He was named his team's Most Valuable Player all four seasons.

"The big thing about Adam a is a he is a terrific individual," said Fontainebleau coach Leonard Tridico. "He's a terrific student and an Eagle Scout. He's the most complete athlete that you can build and put together. He has some God-given ability. But he has a work ethic that is second to none. He does his work out and puts in maximum effort and does everything that needs to be done. He's relentless."

Wise is undecided where he will run in college, but lists LSU, Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette as possible destinations.

"I just want to get the hang of college cross country and contribute at whatever school I join," Wise said.

Girls Most Outstanding Runner

Carlin Beal,  Mandeville, Junior

Carlin Beal got into running because of the fitness test she had to do in P.E. classes in elementary.

"I was good at the mile, if not anything she else," she says.

So then she started running track in junior high school, although she didn't think she was very good at it.

Then she  joined cross country as a freshman at Mandeville High.

"That's  when I found my niche and realized I was a distant runner," said Beal, a junior.

She's steadily improved each year, finishing second in the Class 5A state meet. Her time of 18:24.09 was the fastest among all area runners, helping her earn Most Outstanding Runner on The New Orleans Advocate's All-Metro Cross Country Team.

"She just improves every week," said Mandeville coach Anthony Pequeno. "At the beginning of the year she was  Top 10 every week. But she went from being 8 and 9 to 5 and 6 and then 2 and 3. Then she  ran her best meet at state and got her personal best time and I'm not sure if anybody really ever does that. "

Beal says she is proud of her accomplishments this season.

"There were a couple times at the beginning of the season  I was down on myself and felt stagnant or like I was going backwards," Beal said. "But I talked to some of the other girls and we changed our attitude and we grinded it out. We kept progressing and pushing each other. I'm proud of me as well as all the other girls on my team."

She currently has the fifth fastest time on her school's record board, but would like to at least get to third by the time her senior year ends.

" I want to get my time down to the low 18s or somewhere in the 17s," she said.
