There are three givens in the Capital City Swim League.

The first is that the CCSL Championships will be held each November. Dominant performances by Catholic High and St. Joseph’s Academy are the others.

More than 20 high school teams are expected to compete in the two-day meet that begins Saturday with two sessions of preliminary events at the Crawfish Aquatics pool.

Sunday’s final session is the day when the Bears and Redstickers will look to extend their string of league titles. Catholic has won the boys title the past 21 years, while SJA has a streak of 11 consecutive girls titles.

“We obviously want to swim as fast as possible,” Catholic coach Doug Logsdon said. “There are conflicts for us this year with homecoming, but we’re not going to let that get in the way of the goals we have. This is a meet we use as a stepping-stone to the state meet.”

Action begins at 8:40 a.m. Saturday with girls preliminary heats. Boys preliminary competition will begin at no earlier than noon. Sunday’s final session starts at 1:15 p.m.

Parkview Baptist, Lutcher and Baton Rouge High are among the other teams to note in the boys division. Episcopal and Dutchtown help top the list of other girls teams to note.

“More than anything else, I’m looking for us to get some good, fast swims in,” St. Joseph’s coach Lyle Robelot said. “This is not a meet we taper (rest) for. It’s a good dress rehearsal for the state meet.”

Catholic’s Logsdon is taking the dress rehearsal notion to a new level. He sees relays as a key component in the Bears’ push at the Division I-Class 5A state meet later this month.

So for the CCSL meet, two of Catholic’s top competitors, Grant Grenfell and Colin Finnegan, will do three relays and only one individual event. Most swimmers typically do two individual events and two relays.

“We’ve been working on relay starts and turns,” Logsdon said. “We want to see how fast we can go.”

Each team is allowed a maximum of four competitors per individual event. Logsdon is challenging the Bears to place all four swimmers in the top eight of each event. SJA’s Robelot wants to see his swimmers finish higher than they pre-meet seeding,

Dutchtown’s Alyssa Dilldine helps lead the list of competitors with top times in two events. Dilldine has top the marks in the 200- (1 minute, 58.70 seconds) and 500-yard (5:09.74) freestyles. She won both events last season.

SJA’s MK Miller has the top marks in the 200 individual medley (2:13.90) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.08).

Parkview Baptist’s John Miller (200 freestyle, 1:51.76; 500 freestyle 5:02.30) and Catholic’s Braydon Bergeron (50 freestyle, 22.97 seconds; 100 freestyle, 51.11) have multiple top marks for the boys.

Two St. Joseph’s performers, Cameron Balkom and Victoria Padial, also won events at last year’s CCSL meet. Balkom won the 100 breaststroke a year ago and is seeded first. Padial won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke and is seeded in the top five in those events this year.
