Mt. Carmel will look to defend its Class 5A girls basketball state championship with a new coach.

Panos Bountovinas, who was also the athletic director, resigned last week citing "personal reasons,” according to Joe Boudoin, who is filling in as athletic director.

Bountovinas had served as basketball coach at the school for two years and was named Coach of the Year on The New Orleans Advocate’s All-Metro Team last year.

He led the Cubs to their first basketball title in school history. His team won the title despite entering the playoffs as a No. 9 seed. They finished The Cubs finished 30-6 and were ranked third in The New Orleans Advocate’s season-ending Super 10.

Kevin McGlathery, who was an assistant coach last season, will take over as head coach while Boudoin will take over as athletic director.

Ramon Joseph, who was on staff at Mt. Carmel, will serve as McGlathery’s assistant.

Mt. Carmel will play on Saturday in a Hall of Fame game in Zachary.
