LAKE CHARLES - For the sixth consecutive season, Scotlandville is headed back to the Class 5A state championship.
A freshman got them there.
Javonte Smart sank a 3-pointer as time expired to force overtime, then scored eight points in the extra session in No. 3 Scotlandville’s 62-60 victory over No. 7 Byrd at Burton Coliseum.
Scotlandville advances to Friday’s championship game to play the winner of Tuesday’s Higgins- Natchitoches Central game.
Scotlandville, now on a 19-game winning streak, will be going for its third title in four years after winning it all in 2012 and 2013.
Natchitoches Central beat Scotlandville 60-53 in last season’s title game.
Smart finished with 17 points for the Hornets (32-4).
His biggest came in the final second of regulation, momenst after Byrd missed a pair of free throws that would have sealed it.
Byrd missed four of five free throws in the finals 1:23 of the game.
Scotlandville's Jordan Adebutu had 15 points before fouling out and LaMarcus Lee and Garrick Green had 12 points each.
Green also grabbed 12 rebounds, notching a double-double just two minutes into the second half.
Scotlandville led 36-29, but then was outscored 14-2 in the third quarter to fall behind 43-38. The Hornets went the final six minutes of the quarter without a basket.
Adebutu scored back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth to get the Hornets going.
Demetir Mahoney scored 17 points and Kory Ashley scored 15 for Byrd (26-6), making its making its first tournament appearance since 1997.
