SULPHUR — The John Curtis softball team is a win away from claiming its second straight state title.

Curtis, which won the 2A title last year, rolled to an 8-1 victory over Notre Dame in the Class 3A semifinals Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Patriots (29-2) will play Jena at 7 p.m. Saturday. Jena defeated North Vermilion 10-0 in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Memphis signee Katie Brignac went the distance and allowed just three hits and striking out seven for John Curtis. She retired 11 straight at one point before Grace Doucet’s double in the seventh inning.

Brignac helped her own cause, giving her team all the runs it would need with a two-run homer in the first inning.

Curtis took advantage of seven walks and one hit batter to build a 6-0 lead by the third inning.
