It was all about meet host Pope John Paul II in the girls potion of the LHSAA’s Division IV-Class 2A state powerlifting meet Saturday in Slidell.
With Outstanding Lifter Dominique Bourgeois leading the way, the Jaguars won their 10th state title, scoring 37 points to place ahead of Sterlington at 33 and Archbishop Hannan at 27.
Bourgeois, who won the 165-pound weight class with a total lift of 905 pounds, was the top lifter on the heavy platform.
PJP’s other individual champions were Sophie Samples (105 pounds) and Blaike-Lee Ordes (114). Samples had a total lift of 560 pounds, while Ordes’ total was 655.
Hannan’s Madi Wolfe was the Outstanding Lifter on the light platform. Wolfe had a total lift of 810 pounds while winning the 123-pound weight class. Hannan also got first from Paige Laurent at 132 (685 total).
Northlake Christian’s Kaitlyn Hearty at 148 (705 total) and Lauren Ellison at superheavyweight (735) were also winners along with St. James’ Jervon Whittington at 198 (650).
ALEXANDRIA — The Covington boys team, which won the title last year, finished a close second to host Alexandria Senior High at the LHSAA’s Division I-Class 5A state powerliting meet Saturday. Alexandria outscored Covington 36-35. St. Paul’s was third with 32 points.
Covington senior Josh Bickham, who will play football at Shaw University next season, won the 220-pound weight class after winning the 198-pound weight class last season. Covington’s Tyran Garret won the 181-pound class.
Covington also had a repeat winner on the girls team in Heather Callejas.
St. Paul’s had three individual winners. Nick Gordon won in the 114-pound weight class, while Warner Moore and Ryan Sullivan won in the 165 and 220 pound weight class, respectively.
