Quarterback Kyle Schexnayder was near perfect Friday night, completing 12 of 13 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown as Holy Cross cruised to a 32-0 victory over Vandebilt Catholic in the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Jamboree in Thibodaux.
“We are not going to be the type of team that sits there and throws 40 times, but he made the throws we had to have and he really managed the game really well,” said first-year Holy Cross coach Eric Rebaudo.
Junior running back Tre’ Turner ran for two touchdowns for the Tigers, and Reed Gravolet made a 29 and a 36-yard field goal.
“We had a lot of guys out, but none were with major injuries or anything,” Rebaudo said. “We are just trying to get as healthy as we can.
“We got a lot of experience in the game.”
Wide receiver Michael Chigbu, who has committed to Georgia, didn’t play. Neither did linebacker Adrian Richardson,
“He (Chigbu) was running a little fever the night before but we didn’t feel like pushing it,” Rebaudo said. “He begged me to play but it wasn’t in his best interest or the team’s best interest.
“He could have played if it was a regular game, but we wanted to get some of the other guys in there,” Rebaudo said about Richardson who got nicked up in a scrimmage
Holy Cross plays at Covington on Friday in the regular season opener. Vandebilt plays E.D. White.
