Top-ranked Rummel dropped its first game, falling 10-3 to Don Bosco (New Jersey) Prep on Saturday night.
Alex Bollinger’s 27-yard field goal in the first half was the only points for the Raiders (3-1), ranked No. 1 in The New Orleans Advocate Large School Super 10 and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 5A poll.
Don Bosco answered Bollinger’s field goal on its next possession, scoring on Malik Bakker’s 4-yard touchdown run. A 60-yard kickoff return by Kevin Brennan set up what proved to be the game-winning score.
It was Rummel’s lowest scoring output since a 7-5 victory over Hahnville early in the 2014 regular season.
The Raiders were seeking their second straight out-of-state road victory after beating Wayne County (Mississippi) last week.
The Ironmen (3-1), winners of 14 state titles in New Jersey, improved to 28-4 all-time against out-of–state teams.
Rummel was held to 113 yards in the first half of the defensive struggle. The Raiders limited Bosco to 111 yards in the first half.
The Raiders, also ranked No. 14 nationally by MaxPreps, will play their Catholic League opener Saturday when they plays Shaw (2-2, 0-1 in District 9-5A) at 2 p.m. at Yenni Stadium.
