Preliminaries at SPAR Aquatic Center-Sulphur
Catholic High’s Colin Bone broke Division I and composite/all divisions records in the boys 100-yard freestyle Friday night to help highlight Division I preliminary heats at the Allstate Sugar Bow/Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Swim meet.
Bone swam the 100 freestyle in 45.46 seconds, bettering his own Division I record set last year and the all divisions mark set by Newman’s Patrick Riess in 2012.
Defending champions Catholic and St. Joseph’s Academy had multiple top marks during the late session held at the SPAR Aquatic Center.
Bone, Rummel’s Thomas Vanderbrok, St. Joseph’s Bethany Seagraves and Ashlyn Hunt of Lafayette High all posted two top individual times to help lead their respective teams.
St. Joseph’s Academy’s fast start began with a time of 1 minute, 50.65 seconds in the girls 200-yard medley relay.
Clayton Black, Seagraves and Caroline Beene followed with top individual marks. Black recorded a 1:52.83 in the 200 freestyle, just over a half a second faster than defending champion Megan Loop of Mandeville.
Seagraves led all 200 individual medley qualifiers with a 2:13.65, just ahead of teammate Jeanne Frederic. Beene was up next and swam the 50 freestyle in 24.57 seconds.
Seagraves later swam a 59.82 in the 100 backstroke. Amy Miller (54.00) and Beene (54.03) had the top marks in the girls 100 freestyle.
The duel between Catholic and Jesuit in the relays also was an important part of the story line. The Bears had the boys 200 medley relay in 1:37.84, while Jesuit was at 1:37.97. The Blue Jays got the upper hand in the 200 freestyle relay finishing in 1:27.03 to 1:27.55 for Catholic.
Bone also led all competitors in the 200 freestyle in 1:41.79. Lafayette High’s Hunt had the top times of 57.10 in the 100 butterfly and 1:07.41 in the 100 breaststroke.
Vanderbrok had top times of 1:56.46 in the 200 IM and 52.73 in the 100 backstroke.
St. Joseph’s also had the fastest times in two of the three years adding a 3:36.55 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Jesuit’s Chris Simmons led all 50 freestyle qualifiers, swimming 21.18 seconds.
Defending champions St. Scholastica and Ruston High fared well in the Division II session that opened Friday’s action at the SPAR Aquatic Center.
St. Scholastica had the top qualifier in four individual events and also posted the top times in two of the three girls relays.
Madeleine Rawls and Lindsey Parkins helped lead the way for the Doves. Parkins tallied the top times of 2:19.56 in the 200 IM and 1:00.77 in the 100 backstroke. Rawls had the top marks of 24.68 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 54.13 in the 100 freestyle.
Sacred Heart’s Brianna Serret (100 butterfly, 59,81) and Sarah Harrison (500 freestyle, 5:30.17) and Lakeshore’s Hannan Choppin (100 breaststroke, 1:10.67).
Morgan Meyer set the pace for Ruston, posting top marks of 49.74 100 freestyle and 1:51.12. The Bearcats also had the top times in two relays.
Pope John Paul’s Owen Martin had top times in the 200 IM in 2:04.72 and 500 freestyle in 5:00.82 as did Lakeshore Austin Marr in the 50 freestyle in 23.13 and the 58.30. Holy Cross’ Pedro Rivera was the top 100 breaststroke qualifier in 1:02.04.
