Kristen Nuss scored the lone goal in overtime to lift Mount Carmel to a 1-0 victory over Byrd in the Division I quarterfinals at Pan-Am Stadium.

The goal by Nuss came in the 86th minute of the match and moved Mount Carmel one win away from its first championship appearance since winning it all in 2012.

“In the first half, I thought we played one of our best games of the season,” said Mount Carmel coach Pavlos Petrou. “We played the ball well and created a lot of opportunities. But we knew it was going to be tight.”

Mount Carmel (20-2-2), the No. 1 seed, will host No. 4 seed Mandeville in the semifinals.

The Cubs have now outscored its three playoff opponents (West Jefferson, Terrebonne, Byrd) 22-0.

The back line of Kaitlin Childress, Katherine Dehoog, Karly Treuting, Sydney Blue and keeper Sam Bourgeouis have sparked the defense.

Now Mount Carmel plays Mandeville for the second time this season. The Cubs beat the Skippers 2-1 during the season.

“It was one of those matches that could have gone either way,” Petrou said about the rematch. “They are a good team from back to front.”

DOMINICAN 3, NATCHITOCHES CENTRAL 1: Alex Sequeira scored twice and Marcelle Kepper scored once to lead No. 3 Dominican to a quarterfinal victory over No. 11 Natchitoches Central in the Division I quarterfinals.

Dominican (17-6-5) will play No. 2 St. Scholastica in the semifinals.

LAKESHORE 1, VANDEBILT CATHOLIC 0: Lakeshore, a No. 5 seed, got its third playoff shutout to upset No. 4 Vandebilt Catholic in the Division II quarterfinals.

Lakeshore will play Monday’s Loyola Prep-Neville winner in the semifinals.

UNIVERSITY 5, RIVERSIDE 0: The Rebels’ (9-10-3) run ended on Monday as they fell to district rival University Lab 5-0 in the quarterfinals after pulling out a pair of surprising upsets in the previous two rounds in what was the first playoff appearance in school history.

“Nobody expected us to be where we are,” Riverside coach Jonathan Reed said. “This was a rebuilding year, this was a foundation year and to be in the quarterfinals, it’s one heck of a feeling just to be here.”
