Lusher proved to be too much for Haynes Academy to handle early on. The Lions were dominant from start to finish and downed the Yellow Jackets 33-0 at Joe Yenni Stadium.
Lions head coach Louis Landrum wanted to see if his team was ready to rebound after last week. Unfortunately for Lusher, they were mauled by Country Day 40-7 at home.
“After what took place last week, I needed to see what my team was made of,” Landrum said. “We had a lot of things to work on, and I think we did pretty well. I preached to them all week about staying consistent and playing balanced.”
The Lions were the epitome of balance Thursday night as they rolled up 379 total yards of offense. Quarterback Eli Poche commanded the offense and threw for 277 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also added one rushing score.
Haynes Academy would cross into Lion territory only once the entire ball game. Quarterback Charles Magaw led his team down to the Lusher 29-yard line with 0:21 left in the first quarter. Two plays later, he would throw a costly interception to Lusher linebacker Todd Hamilton.
Magaw finished the night 0-9 in passing with one interception. Junior Malik Bailey carried the workload for Haynes and posted 38 yards on 11 carries.
Poche would connect with Simeon Thomas for a 34-yard touchdown pass with 6:52 left in the third quarter. It would be the final score of the game, despite the overwhelming offensive showcase by the Lions.
Senior Thomas Blair waltzed into the end zone on a 21-yard pass from Poche just before halftime. The score put the Lions up comfortably 26-0 over the Yellow Jackets.
Haynes had no answer for the Lions’ ground and pound rushing attack in the first half. Sophomore Ari Broussard carried the ball 14 times for 60 yards and one score in the first half alone. He finished with 63 yards on 15 carries.
Poche finished the first half with two touchdown scores. He found Domanik Cleggett for a 30-yard score on a fourth and 5.
The Lions scored their second touchdown of the game in as many drives when Broussard scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. The touchdown was set up by a 33-yard pass from Poche to Thomas.
Lusher first got on the board after a 44-yard pass from Poche to Jalyen Stewart brought the Lions down to the Yellow Jackets’ 4-yard line. Two plays later, Poche would barge in from a yard out.
Thomas hauled in six receptions for 143 yards and one score. Fellow wide receivers Blair and Cleggett would finish their nights with 33 and 51 yards receiving, respectively.
