ST. AMANT — Jacardo Hawkins scored 21 points to lead East Ascension High to a 62-57 win over Chalmette, and a semifinal berth at the Ralph Sellers Gold Dome Classic on Thursday.

Hawkins scored eight first-quarter points before battling foul trouble. The junior post player came back to score 13 in the third quarter as East Ascension took a 51-47 lead.

Also in double digits for the Spartans were Javaughn Williams with 16, and Jeremy McInnis with 12.

East Ascension (5-0) advances to semifinal play, where it will face Amite, a 76-61 winner over Sterlington. Tournament host St. Amant moved on with a 61-52 win over Hammond.

Woodlawn played Airline in the last contest of the day. That game’s winner will face St. Amant (6-0) in Friday’s other semifinal game.

“I thought the things we did good, we did real good,” East Ascension coach Kenny Almond said. “When we played bad, I don’t want to take anything away from Chalmette, but I thought we made mistakes.

“We had some mental errors, and made some foolish passes and we missed free throws. If we can take care of us, we’ll be all right.”

Chalmette (3-3) was paced by point guard Jarrel Green, who made six 3-pointers and led all scorers with 28 points. Roland Major was the only other Owl in double figures with 11.

“I liked that my kids played very hard against a very well-coached team,” Chalmette coach Butch Stockton said. “I was really impressed with the play of Jarrel Green. He runs the show for us.”

The Spartans led 34-31 at the half, but Chalmette took its only lead of the second half two minutes in. Major scored on a drive, and Green hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 39-38 lead.

Williams hit two free throws, and Chad Hill fed Hawkins for an inside basket as EAHS took a 42-39 lead. Chalmette got back within one point twice more in the quarter, the last coming on Blake Howard’s put back as EAHS led 44-43.

Hawkins converted a three-point play, and then took another assist from Hill for a 49-43 lead with two minutes left in the quarter. Green’s three-point play helped the Owls trail 51-47 after three.

In the fourth, Green’s 3-pointer got Chalmette within a point for the last time at 56-55 with five minutes to play. East Ascension then committed two turnovers, and missed the front end of a 1-and-1.

Green and Marquis Hamilton each missed 3-pointers as Chalmette was unable to take advantage. Williams got the Spartans back on track with a 3-pointer from the left wing. East Ascension began working the clock, and coasted in as Chalmette missed its last six shots from the field.

St. Amant 61, Hammond 52: St. Amant broke open a close game in the second half when it stepped up its defense. The Gators led 47-42 entering the fourth, and scored the quarter’s first eight points for a 55-42 lead with five minutes left.

Hammond could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

“We’re a guard-oriented team, and we’ve got to distribute the ball,” St. Amant coach Gary Duhe said. “We had trouble attacking their zone in the first half. In the second half we got the turnovers and made layups.”

Dominique Wilmore led St. Amant with 21 points and Donald Leblanc added 13. Devin Weber topped Hammond with 19 points.
