RUSTON — An early gamble helped set the stage for No. 18 Dutchtown to claim a 31-17 victory over No. 15 Ruston High to open the Class 5A playoffs Friday night.
After taking the opening kickoff and scoring on 2-yard run quarterback Jared Sparks, the Griffins (8-3) opted for an onside kick that led to a 37-yard yard field goal by Christian Carillo. DHS led 10-0 before the Bearcats ran an offensive play.
Fitell Bolding and Sparks helped lead the way for the Griffins (8-3), who will host No. 2 Zachary (10-1) in the regional round.
Bolding ran for 82 yards on 27 carries but did not score a touchdown. Sparks handled those duties, scoring four times, including a 16-yard TD run. Sontus Mitchell led Ruston (6-5) with 126 yards on 19 carries and scored two TDs.
LUTCHER 34, AVOYELLES 8: In Lutcher, the top-seeded Bulldogs of Class 3A made up for not scoring in the first quarter in a big way.
Quarterback Jontre Kirklin accounted for 200 yards of offense as Lutcher went on to score 27 points in second and third quarters. Kirklin completed 10 of 13 passes for 157 yards and two TDs for the Bulldogs (10-1), who host No. 16 Wossman (7-4) in the regional round.
Al’dontre Davis caught a 37-yard TD pass from Kirklin and also returned a kickoff 51 yards for another TD for LHS. No. 32 Avoyelles finished 4-7.
NORTH WEBSTER 29, PORT ALLEN 27: In Springhill, Devin White ran for 293 yards on 34 carries and scored three touchdowns for sixth-seeded North Webster in Class 3A, but still had to withstand a late rally by No. 27 Port Allen.
Ken Broussard, who ran for 85 yards on 18 carries, gave the Pelicans a 27-23 lead in the fourth quarter when he caught a 16-yard TD pass from Jarious Robertson. Broussard also returned a kickoff for a TD for PAHS (4-7).
But White, one of the state’s top 2016 prospects, scored on a 3-yard run to seal the win for NWHS (9-2).
CALVARY BAPTIST 50, DUNHAM 7: In Shreveport, sixth-seeded Calvary (9-2) raced out to a 36-0 halftime lead in Division III action.
Kyle Jones ran for 173 yards on 17 carries for the Cavaliers. Rodarius Williams returned two interceptions for TDs for the winners.
Jake Bartley threw for one touchdown and ran for two others against No. 11 Dunham (7-4).
Mike Williams’ 29-yard TD pass to Makiya Tongue was the lone score for Dunham.
HAMILTON CHRISTIAN 13, CATHOLIC-PC 7: In Lake Charles, fifth-seeded Hamilton Christian (10-1) stopped the No. 12 Hornets at the HCA 37 in the final minute on fourth down to clinch the Division IV win.
Kenan Fontenot’s 70-yard punt return for a TD snapped what was a scoreless tie with 59 seconds left in the first half. Patrick Tizano scored the other TD for Hamilton on a 7-yard run.
CHSPC (6-5) was limited 114 yards. Nathan Carriere scored on a 1-yard run with 2:11 remaining in the game. The Hornets recovered an onside kick at the HCA 42 to set up final sequence.
