Central High’s Raegan Willis enjoyed a record-setting night at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division I state powerlifting meet Saturday at Alexandria Senior High.

Willis won the 165-pound weight class and was the outstanding lifter on the upper weight-class platform. Two of her three lifts established state records in the 165 weight class and the other tied a record.

A total lift of 1,030 pounds was only part of the story for Willis, who set state records with a 400-pound squat and a 430-pound deadlift. She tied a record with a 200-pound bench press.

Another Central girl, Reagan Cress, won the 148-pound class with a total lift of 860 pounds that included a 340-pound squat. Walker High’s Breanna Gurzynski won the girls 220-pound plus division with a total lift of 1,085 pounds, including a 520-pound squat.

Central also had boys champion as Blaise Courville won the super heavyweight class. Courville’s total lift of 1,690 pounds that included a 700-pound squat.

Results to stand

LHSAA Assistant Executive Director Keith Alexander said the final results for the girls Division V powerlifting meet held Saturday at Pope John Paul II will stand as previously reported. Alexander confirmed that a question about the final team totals was raised.

Delhi and Ascension Catholic tied with 45 points, just two ahead of False River Academy. Delhi claimed the team title by virtue of having more first-place finishers. Alexander said powerlifting officials were in on the process that ended with the decision that the results would stand as is.

“Things are going to stay the way they are in the team standings,” Alexander said. “There were some issues at the meet. But ultimately, those results won’t change.”
