1. THE JRUE DILEMMA

GM Dell Demps punted when asked if Philadelphia sold New Orleans damaged goods when it traded for point guard Jrue Holiday in 2013. Both Demps and new coach Alvin Gentry touted the team’s depth at the position, saying it would rely on Tyreke Evans and Norris Cole until Holiday (who has played 74 games in two seasons in New Orleans) can be full-go in January. With the Pelicans talking improvement, it’s not how you want to start your season.

2. SUPER SIZE ME

Anthony Davis added a tattoo of his late grandfather onto his bulging right upper arm this offseason, emblematic of the 15 pounds of extra bulk he now carries. Demps said the Pelicans wanted Davis to add core strength without sacrificing quickness. “I feel great right now working out, explosive and quick,” Davis said. But he admitted, “When you go against other people, that’s a lot different.” Davis’ new physique will be a hot topic in training camp.

3. DARE TO BE GREAT

The Pelicans made the playoffs as the No. 8 Western Conference seed last year. With Alvin Gentry bringing a Golden State Warriors style with him, the Pelicans’ goal is to move into elite territory. “We all have a hunger,” Quincy Pondexter said. “From the coaches to the players to the front office, everyone cohesively has a hunger for this season and going forward. It’s a good environment to be in.”
