Coach Alvin Gentry said over the weekend that his regular rotation players could see something of a minutes increase starting this week. Though the Pelicans have five exhibition games remaining — and starters often don’t see more minutes until later in the preseason — Gentry is installing a new system and wants repetition for his top players. “We’ve got to start somewhat playing rotation players and lineups that we may have to end up playing in the regular season,” Gentry said.
Running of the Bulls
Like New Orleans, Chicago is adapting to a new system, and like the Pelicans, the Bulls are looking to pick up their pace. New coach Fred Hoiberg prefers a quick tempo, a departure for the Bulls, who ranked 21st in the NBA in pace last season. The Pelicans were 27th. So far this preseason, the Pelicans rank third among NBA teams in pace. The Bulls are 11th.
A.D. for 3
Anthony Davis was 2-of-3 on 3-pointers in Friday’s loss to the Hawks, and those three attempts were fine by Gentry. Asked his reaction to Davis launching three triples, Gentry said, “Take five. Take seven. Take 10. If he’s open, shoot ’em.” Davis is working on his long-distance shooting almost every day in practice and said Gentry is encouraging him to shoot from long range.
