Williams is hired by Hornets president Hugh Weber after gaining notoriety as an assistant coach with Portland. At 38, he is the NBA’s youngest head coach.

July 27, 2010

Dell Demps is hired as general manager.

April 15, 2011

The Hornets, led by Chris Paul, reach the Western Conference playoffs as the No. 7 seed with a 46-36 record. The team loses to the Lakers in six games.

The Pelicans finish 27-55 with a slimmed-down lineup to save salary-cap space. Vice President Mickey Loomis says, “We absolutely have the right general manager and absolutely have the right coach.”

Williams is named an assistant coach for the USA Basketball team for the period of 2013-16.

The Pelicans finish injury-riddled season with a 34-48 record.

Team USA wins the gold medal in the FIBA World Cup with Davis as a key player and Williams on the coaching staff.

Jan. 19, 2015

Speculation begins that Williams’ job is in jeopardy after the Pelicans lose 99-92 at the Knicks, who had lost 16 in a row.

April 15, 2015

The Pelicans beat the Spurs 108-103 in the last game of the regular season to win the Western Conference’s eighth and final playoff berth. The Pelicans finish 45-37, an 11-game improvement, even though point guard Jrue Holiday was sidelined for half the season for the second consecutive year.

April 23, 2015

The Pelicans lead 89-69 entering the fourth quarter of Game 3 of their Western Conference quarterfinal at the Smoothie King Center but blow the lead to No. 1 seed Golden State. The Pelicans lose 123-119 on their way to being swept.

Echoing his players, Williams says he’s looking forward to building on this season and having a better one in 2015-16. He said he isn’t concerned about not getting a contract extension.
