Injury losses continue to mean roster additions for the New Orleans Pelicans.
On Wednesday, the club announced the signing of center Mirza Begi?, a 7-foot-1 native of Yugoslavia.
Begi? most recently played for Laboral Kutxa Baskonia of the Spanish ACB League. Undrafted in 2007, Begi? has played professionally since 2003 in Slovenia, Italy, Lithuania, Greece and Spain. The 265-pound Begi? is a two-time Slovenian League All-Star (2007, 2009), a Lithuanian League All-Star (2010), and led the Euroleague in blocked shots in 2011 at 2.3 per game.
Last week the Pelicans signed 7-footer Jerome Jordan.
Starting center Omer Asik (calf strain) and backup Alexis Ajinca (hamstring strain) are sidelined with injuries, and though there the Pelicans announced timetables for their return – Asik was expected to miss three weeks as of last week, Ajinca four to six – those were estimates, coach Alvin Gentry said last week, and the team is uncertain exactly when either player will return to the court.
The Pelicans currently have 20 players on their roster and can carry as many as 15 into the regular season.
